ENTEREG Alvimopan
- Medicine Name: Entereg
- API: Alvimopan
- Dosage Form & Strength:
- Capsules: 12 mg
- Manufactured By: Merck
Entereg (alvimopan) is an opioid antagonist used to accelerate the time to upper and lower gastrointestinal recovery following surgeries that include partial bowel resection with primary anastomosis.
Recommended Dosage:
The recommended adult dosage of Alvimopan is 12 mg administered 30 minutes to 5 hours before surgery followed by 12 mg twice daily beginning the day after surgery until discharge for a maximum of 7 days. Patients should not receive more than 15 doses of Alvimopan.
- Long-term use of this therapeutic drug may increase the risk of a heart attack. It should only be used short term in a hospital setting. Patients must be monitored closely for chest pain, breathing difficulty, or unusual fatigue throughout the treatment.
- Opioid-tolerant patients may experience stomach-related adverse reactions like diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, or cramping when using Alvimopan. The medicine is not recommended for those using opioids for more than seven consecutive days before starting treatment.
- Patients with serious liver problems may not process the drug properly, leading to higher levels in the body. This increases the chance of harmful side effects. Alvimopan should be avoided in severe liver impairment unless absolutely necessary and closely supervised.
- People with end-stage kidney disease may experience increased exposure to the medicine since their kidneys cannot remove it well. This raises the risk of adverse reactions. Alvimopan should not be used in such patients because of safety concerns.
- The safety of this medicinal product in pregnant women is not established. It may increase risks to the unborn baby. Use this medicine only if clearly required and approved by a clinician after weighing possible benefits against potential harm.
- It is not known whether Alvimopan passes into human breast milk. Because potential effects on a nursing infant are uncertain, breastfeeding mothers should use the medication cautiously. A doctor may advise stopping breastfeeding or choosing a safer alternative treatment.
