Dificid (Fidaxomicin)
Medicine Name: Dificid
API: Fidaxomicin
Dosage Form & Strength: Tablets: 200 mg and Oral Suspension: 200 mg/5 mL
Manufactured By: Merck
Dificid (fidaxomicin) is a macrolide antibacterial used in adult and pediatric patients aged 6 months and older for the treatment of C. difficile-associated diarrhea. This antibiotic medicine is not to be used for treating other types of infections in the body.
Recommended Dosage:
Adult Patients: The recommended dosage of Dificid for adult patients is one 200 mg tablet administered orally twice daily with or without food for 10 days.
Pediatric Patients (6 Months to Less than 18 Years of Age): The recommended dosage for pediatric patients weighing at least 12.5 kg and able to swallow tablets is one 200 mg tablet administered orally twice daily for 10 days. If not able to swallow tablets, pediatric patients may be dosed with Dificid oral suspension as:
- Pediatric patients weighing 4 kg to less than 7 kg: 2 mL administered orally twice daily
- Pediatric patients weighing 7 kg to less than 9 kg: 3 mL administered orally twice daily
- Pediatric patients weighing 9 kg to less than 12.5 kg: 4 mL administered orally twice daily
- Pediatric patients weighing 12.5 kg and above: 5 mL administered orally twice daily
- Acute hypersensitivity reactions, including pruritus, dyspnea, rash, and angioedema of the mouth, throat, and face may occur with Fidaxomicin. If a serious hypersensitivity reaction occurs, Fidaxomicin should be stopped and appropriate therapy needs to be instituted.
- Some patients with hypersensitivity reactions to Fidaxomicin also reported a history of allergy to other macrolides. Clinicians prescribing Fidaxomicin to those with a known macrolide allergy should be aware of the probability of hypersensitivity reactions.
- Dificid is not expected to be useful for the treatment of other types of infections because of the minimal systemic absorption of fidaxomicin. It has not been studied for the treatment of infections other than CDAD. The medicine should only be used to treat CDAD.
- Prescribing the medicine Fidaxomicin in the absence of proven or strongly suspected C. difficile infection is unlikely to provide benefit to the patient and increases the risk of the development of drug-resistant bacteria.
