Medical Uses
Ampyra (dalfampridine, also known as fampridine), from Acorda Therapeutics, is a potassium-channel blocker indicated to improve walking in adults with multiple sclerosis, as demonstrated by an increase in walking speed. It is the only medicine specifically approved for this purpose.
Dalfampridine blocks potassium channels on nerve fibers, which helps strengthen the conduction of electrical signals along demyelinated (damaged) nerves in MS, improving the transmission of nerve impulses that control movement.
