Medical Uses
Aristada (aripiprazole lauroxil) is a long-acting intramuscular injection for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults. Depending on the dose, it is given once a month, every 6 weeks or every 2 months, which can help patients who struggle to take daily tablets stay on treatment.
Aripiprazole lauroxil is a prodrug that is slowly converted to aripiprazole in the body. Aripiprazole acts as a partial agonist at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors and as an antagonist at 5-HT2A receptors, helping to control symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions. Treatment is started together with oral aripiprazole or the Aristada Initio regimen.
