Medical Uses
Belsomra (suvorexant) is a prescription sleep medicine for adults with insomnia characterised by difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep. The usual dose is 10 mg taken once per night within 30 minutes of going to bed, with at least 7 hours remaining before the planned time of waking; the maximum dose is 20 mg once daily.
Suvorexant blocks the binding of the wake-promoting neuropeptides orexin A and orexin B to their receptors (OX1R and OX2R). By turning down this wake signal, it helps people fall asleep and stay asleep, rather than sedating the brain broadly.
