Erivedge (vismodegib) is a hedgehog pathway inhibitor indicated for the treatment of adults with metastatic basal cell carcinoma (BCC), or with locally advanced basal cell carcinoma (BCC) that has recurred following surgery, or who are not candidates for surgery and who are not candidates for radiation.
Recommended Dosage:
The recommended dosage of Erivedge is 150 mg taken orally once daily, with or without food, until there is evidence of disease progression or until unacceptable toxicity. Swallow capsules whole. It is not advisable to open or crush capsules.
If any dose of Erivedge is missed, resume dosing with the next scheduled dose.
- Treatment with Erivedge may cause serious skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis. Patients should immediately report symptoms like rash, blistering, peeling skin, or sores. Stop treatment if serious skin reactions are noted.
- This drug can cause early closure of growth plates in children, resulting in stunted growth. Do not use it in pediatric patients whose bones are still developing. Careful consideration is needed before prescribing this medicine to younger individuals.
- Erivedge can cause life-threatening birth defects or fetal death if taken during pregnancy. Women must use effective contraception during treatment and avoid becoming pregnant. Pregnancy testing is required before starting therapy and throughout the treatment.
- It is not known if this drug passes into human breast milk, but it may harm a nursing infant. Women should not breastfeed during treatment and for a period after the final dose, as advised by their healthcare provider.
- Patients taking Erivedge should avoid donating blood during treatment and for at least 24 months after the final dose. This precaution helps prevent exposure of the drug to pregnant women through donated blood.
