Medical Uses
Cleviprex (clevidipine) is an intravenous medicine used in hospitals to reduce blood pressure when oral treatment is not feasible or not desirable, such as around heart surgery, in emergency departments and in intensive care. Its effect starts within minutes and wears off within 5 to 15 minutes of stopping, so blood pressure can be adjusted precisely.
Clevidipine blocks L-type calcium channels in the smooth muscle of the arteries, relaxing them and lowering blood pressure. It is rapidly broken down by esterases in the blood, which gives it its very short action.
