Medical Uses
Cyanokit (hydroxocobalamin) is an antidote used to treat known or suspected cyanide poisoning, for example in people who have inhaled smoke from house or industrial fires, or who have swallowed or been exposed to cyanide. The usual adult starting dose is 5 g given by intravenous infusion over 15 minutes, which can be repeated depending on the severity of poisoning.
Hydroxocobalamin binds cyanide ions to form cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12), a non-toxic compound that is excreted in the urine. This removes cyanide from the body’s cells and allows normal cellular respiration to resume.
