Medical Uses
Demser (metyrosine) is used in patients with pheochromocytoma, a tumour of the adrenal gland that releases excess adrenaline-like hormones. It is used to prepare patients for surgery, to manage patients when surgery is not possible, and for long-term treatment of malignant pheochromocytoma. It is not recommended for essential hypertension.
Metyrosine blocks tyrosine hydroxylase, the enzyme that controls the first step in making catecholamines (dopamine, noradrenaline and adrenaline). This reduces catecholamine production by 35 to 80 percent, helping to control high blood pressure and related symptoms. The usual starting dose is 250 mg four times daily.
