Medical Uses
Dojolvi (triheptanoin) is approved as a source of calories and fatty acids for children and adults with molecularly confirmed long-chain fatty acid oxidation disorders (LC-FAOD). In these rare genetic conditions the body cannot break down long-chain fats for energy, leading to low blood sugar, muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) and heart problems.
Triheptanoin is made of three seven-carbon fatty acids that can be broken down without the missing long-chain enzymes. It provides energy and also replenishes key intermediates of the energy cycle in cells. The dose is up to 35 percent of the patient’s total daily calories, divided into at least four doses and mixed with food.
