Medical Uses
Egaten (triclabendazole) is an anti-parasitic medicine used to treat fascioliasis, an infection of the liver and bile ducts caused by the liver flukes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica, in patients aged 6 years and older. People are usually infected by eating raw watercress or other water plants contaminated with the parasite.
Triclabendazole is absorbed and converted to active metabolites that are taken up by the flukes and disrupt their microtubules and energy metabolism, killing both immature and adult forms. The approved dose is two doses of 10 mg/kg given 12 hours apart with food.
