Medical Uses
Emsam (selegiline transdermal system) is a once-daily skin patch for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults. It is the only antidepressant MAOI delivered through the skin, which reduces exposure of the gut to the drug.
Selegiline inhibits monoamine oxidase enzymes in the brain, increasing levels of mood-related neurotransmitters such as serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine. The starting and target dose is 6 mg/24 h, applied to dry, intact skin on the upper torso, thigh or outer upper arm.
