Medical Uses
EpiPen (epinephrine) is a ready-to-use auto-injector for the emergency treatment of severe allergic reactions (type I reactions, including anaphylaxis) caused by insect stings or bites, foods, medicines and other allergens, as well as idiopathic or exercise-induced anaphylaxis. It is prescribed to people who are at increased risk of anaphylaxis so they can carry it at all times. EpiPen 0.3 mg is intended for patients weighing 30 kg or more and EpiPen Jr 0.15 mg for children weighing 15 to 30 kg.
Epinephrine stimulates alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors. It tightens blood vessels to raise blood pressure and reduce swelling, and relaxes the airways to ease breathing. The auto-injector is pressed against the outer thigh and can be used through clothing.
