Medical Uses
Estring is a soft vaginal ring that treats moderate to severe symptoms of vaginal and vulvar atrophy after menopause, such as dryness, burning, itching and pain during intercourse. In the UK it is licensed for atrophic vaginitis caused by oestrogen deficiency in postmenopausal women.
The ring sits in the upper vagina and releases about 7.5 micrograms of estradiol a day for 90 days, acting on the local tissues. Some estradiol does reach the bloodstream, but less than with oestrogen tablets or patches. The patient leaflet says it takes about 2–3 weeks for the tissues to recover.
