Medical Uses
Humatin (paromomycin) is used to treat acute and chronic intestinal amoebiasis, a bowel infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica. It is also used alongside other treatment in hepatic coma (hepatic encephalopathy), to cut down the gut bacteria that produce ammonia. It does not work for amoebic infection outside the bowel, such as a liver abscess.
Paromomycin is an aminoglycoside that stops bacteria making proteins by binding to their ribosomes. Taken by mouth it is hardly absorbed, and almost all of it passes out in the stool, so it acts directly inside the bowel. For amoebiasis the US dose is 25–35 mg per kg a day, split into three doses with meals, for 5 to 10 days.
