Javlor (Vinflunine)

  • Medicine Name: Javlor
  • Active Ingredient (API): Vinflunine
  • Dosage Form & Strength: Concentrate for solution for infusion: 25 mg/mL (50 mg/2 mL, 100 mg/4 mL and 250 mg/10 mL vials)
  • Manufactured By: Pierre Fabre Médicament (France)

Medical Uses

Javlor (vinflunine) is a chemotherapy medicine used on its own for adults with advanced or metastatic transitional cell cancer of the urinary tract (including the bladder) after a platinum-containing regimen has failed. It is given as a 20-minute intravenous infusion every 3 weeks.

Vinflunine binds to tubulin, the protein cells use to build the structure they need to divide, which stops cancer cells from dividing. In the main study, 253 patients received vinflunine with best supportive care and 117 received best supportive care alone. Median survival was 6.9 versus 4.6 months; the difference was statistically significant after adjusting for prognostic factors.

Warnings & Precautions

  • Low white blood cell counts (neutropenia), anaemia and tiredness are very common. Treatment must not start if neutrophils are below 1,500/mm³ or platelets below 100,000/mm³, and blood counts are checked before each cycle.
  • Constipation is common and can be serious. Laxatives and diet measures are recommended from day 1 to day 5–7 of each cycle.
  • QT prolongation, low sodium and posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome have been reported.
  • Not to be used while breastfeeding. It has not been studied in patients with a performance status of 2 or more.

Documentation & Availability

Is Javlor still available?

Its EU authorisation is still valid. It is no longer marketed in France (from June 2026), but Italy and Spain still supply it. We confirm the country of supply and stock before quoting.

Which vials should be ordered?

The dose is calculated from body surface area: usually 320 mg/m², or 280 mg/m² for some patients, with further reductions for kidney or liver problems and for patients aged 75 and over. The oncologist should give the dose in mg and the number of cycles, and we will match it to the vial sizes that are available (2 mL and 10 mL vials are the ones currently marketed in Italy).

What documents do we need?
  • A prescription from the medical oncologist with the dose in mg and the number of cycles
  • A histopathology report and a summary of previous platinum chemotherapy
  • Government-issued photo ID of the patient

We confirm the order only after the prescription has been checked.

How is Javlor stored and shipped?

Unopened vials must be kept in a refrigerator at 2–8 °C, in the original box to protect them from light, so it is shipped in a cold chain. It is a cytotoxic medicine and should be prepared in a hospital chemotherapy unit.

Sourcing & Delivery

Javlor needs cold-chain shipping and goes straight to the treating hospital’s pharmacy. IPN sources it through authorised distributors in markets where it is still sold and arranges the named-patient import.

Global Approval Status:

  • United States: Not approved.
