Libervant (Diazepam Buccal Film)

Libervant (diazepam) buccal film, from Aquestive Therapeutics, is indicated for the acute treatment of intermittent, stereotypic episodes of frequent seizure activity (acute repetitive seizures, “seizure clusters”) that are distinct from a patient’s usual seizure pattern, in patients with epilepsy 2 years of age and older.

Diazepam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the effect of the neurotransmitter GABA in the brain, producing an anticonvulsant effect. Libervant is applied as a thin film to the inside of the cheek (buccal mucosa), offering a needle-free, easy-to-administer rescue option for seizure clusters.

• Boxed warning: Risks from concomitant use with opioids — profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death.
• Risk of abuse, misuse, and addiction; assess each patient’s risk before prescribing.
• CNS depression — may impair physical/mental abilities; avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants.
• Not for chronic, daily use in the management of ongoing seizures — for intermittent, rescue use only.
• Respiratory depression risk, particularly in patients with compromised respiratory function.
• Withdrawal symptoms can occur after discontinuation of long-term benzodiazepine use.
