  • Medicine Name: NuvaRing
  • Active Ingredient (API): Etonogestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol
  • Dosage Form & Strength: Vaginal ring releasing 0.120 mg etonogestrel and 0.015 mg ethinyl estradiol per day
  • Manufactured By: Organon (made by N.V. Organon, the Netherlands)

Medical Uses

NuvaRing is a flexible, monthly vaginal ring for preventing pregnancy. One ring is placed in the vagina and left in for 3 weeks, then taken out for a 1-week ring-free break; a new ring goes in exactly one week after the last one was removed.

The ring releases about 0.120 mg of etonogestrel (a progestin) and 0.015 mg of ethinyl estradiol (an oestrogen) each day. These hormones stop ovulation and change the cervical mucus and womb lining so that pregnancy is prevented.

Warnings & Precautions

  • Boxed warning: cigarette smoking raises the risk of serious heart and blood vessel events with combined hormonal contraceptives. Women over 35 who smoke must not use NuvaRing.
  • There is a higher risk of blood clots, stroke and heart attack, especially with other risk factors.
  • Not for women with a past or current blood clot, stroke or heart disease, a clotting disorder, uncontrolled high blood pressure, migraine with aura, breast cancer, liver tumours or liver disease, or unexplained vaginal bleeding.
  • It does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections. If the ring is out for more than 3 hours, follow the label instructions and use condoms for 7 days.

Documentation & Availability

Can NuvaRing be imported to India?

Yes. When a gynaecologist prescribes NuvaRing and it cannot be bought locally, it can be imported in the patient’s name under the named-patient route.

How many rings should I order?

One ring covers one 4-week cycle (3 weeks in, 1 week out). The US box contains 3 rings, which is 3 months. Since the rings must be used within 4 months of being dispensed, it is best to order no more than about 4 months at a time.

What documents do we need?
  • A prescription from a gynaecologist
  • A short medical history, including smoking status, blood pressure and any past blood clots or migraine
  • Government-issued photo ID of the patient

We confirm the order only after the prescription has been checked.

How should NuvaRing be stored?

Before it is dispensed, it is kept in a refrigerator at 2–8 °C. After you receive it, you can keep it at room temperature (up to 25 °C, short spells up to 30 °C) for up to 4 months, away from direct sunlight. Use it within 4 months or before the printed expiry date, whichever comes first.

Sourcing & Delivery

NuvaRing must be kept cold until it is dispensed and used within 4 months after that, so we confirm the shipping arrangement and the use-by date with every quote. IPN sources it from authorised distributors.
