Medical Uses
Nyxoid (naloxone) is a ready-to-use nasal spray for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose, seen as slowed breathing or reduced consciousness. It is for adults and adolescents aged 14 and over, and is meant for use in both home and healthcare settings, for example by a trained family member or carer while waiting for an ambulance.
Naloxone blocks opioid receptors, quickly reversing the effects of opioids such as heroin, morphine and fentanyl, including dangerous breathing problems. One spray goes into one nostril. If there is no response after 2–3 minutes, a second dose is given with a new spray in the other nostril; if the person wakes and then slips back, the second dose is given straight away.
