Medical Uses
Scopoderm (hyoscine, also called scopolamine) is a small patch worn behind the ear to prevent travel sickness: nausea, vomiting and dizziness on sea, air or road journeys. In the UK it can be used by adults and children aged 10 and over. Put it on about 5–6 hours before travelling, or the evening before. One patch works for up to 3 days; on a longer trip, replace it with a new patch behind the other ear. In the US, the similar Transderm Scop patch is also approved for nausea after surgery.
Hyoscine blocks muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the inner-ear balance system and in the part of the brain that triggers vomiting. This reduces the mixed signals that cause travel sickness.
