Medical Uses
Taloxa (felbamate) is used in Europe as an add-on treatment for Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in patients aged 4 and over, when the seizures are not controlled by other suitable antiepileptic medicines. It is never a first choice, and the label asks doctors to reassess whether it is working after 2–3 months. In the US, felbamate (Felbatol) is also approved for partial seizures in adults who have not responded to other treatments.
The exact way felbamate controls seizures is not known; the European label states that it is not an NMDA antagonist. The dose is built up slowly over several weeks, and when it is started the doses of other antiepileptics such as carbamazepine, phenytoin or valproate are usually reduced by 20–30%.
