ZOSTAVAX Injection

ZOSTAVAX (zoster vaccine live), from Merck, was indicated for the prevention of herpes zoster (shingles) in individuals 50 years of age and older.

ZOSTAVAX is a live attenuated vaccine that boosts varicella-zoster virus-specific immunity, helping to reduce the risk of shingles and its complications, such as postherpetic neuralgia. Note: ZOSTAVAX was discontinued in the US market in November 2020 in favor of the newer recombinant vaccine Shingrix, but it may still be available or relevant in certain other markets.

• Contraindicated in immunocompromised individuals, as it is a live attenuated vaccine.
• Should not be administered to pregnant women.
• Injection-site reactions (redness, pain, swelling) are commonly reported.
• Patients should discuss with their physician whether ZOSTAVAX or the newer recombinant Shingrix vaccine is appropriate for their situation.

What documents are required to import ZOSTAVAX to India?

ZOSTAVAX may be imported in the patient’s name only, based on a treating physician’s recommendation. Required documents include:

• A valid prescription/recommendation from a registered physician
• Patient ID and age proof (issued by the Government of India)

How is the order confirmed?

The order is confirmed only after receipt and verification of a valid prescription and confirmation of sourcing feasibility, given the product’s discontinued status in some markets.

Is ZOSTAVAX available in India?

ZOSTAVAX is not commercially marketed in India. Availability through the Named Patient Program (NPP) depends on sourcing feasibility.
