CAPVAXIVE (Pneumococcal 21-valent Conjugate Vaccine)

CAPVAXIVE, from Merck, is a 21-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine indicated for active immunization of adults 18 years and older for the prevention of invasive disease and pneumonia caused by the 21 Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes covered by the vaccine — selected to cover a large share of invasive pneumococcal disease seen in adults, particularly those 65 and older.

CAPVAXIVE is given as a single 0.5 mL intramuscular dose. It is not intended as a treatment for active infection — it is a preventive immunization.

• Standard vaccine precautions apply: hypersensitivity to any vaccine component, and syncope (fainting) can occur after any injection — observation post-dose is advised.
• Immunocompromised individuals may have a diminished immune response.
• Common side effects: injection-site pain, redness or swelling, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, reduced appetite.
