CREXONT (Carbidopa and Levodopa Extended-Release Capsules)

CREXONT, from Amneal Pharmaceuticals, is a novel extended-release carbidopa/levodopa capsule indicated for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, including in patients transitioning from immediate-release or other carbidopa-levodopa products who need more consistent motor symptom control.

Levodopa crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted to dopamine, replenishing striatal dopamine levels reduced in Parkinson’s disease. Carbidopa inhibits peripheral breakdown of levodopa. CREXONT’s capsule releases about 25% of its levodopa immediately, followed by extended release of the remaining 75%, aiming for smoother, longer-lasting symptom control between doses.

• Hallucinations and psychotic-like behavior can occur, especially in elderly patients.
• Falling asleep during activities and sudden sleep onset have been reported.
• Dyskinesia (involuntary movements) may occur or worsen.
• Do not stop abruptly — sudden discontinuation can cause a syndrome resembling neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
• Not for use with nonselective monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors.
• Common side effects: nausea, dizziness, headache, dyskinesia, hallucinations, insomnia.
