Medical Uses
KALBITOR (ecallantide), from Takeda, is indicated for the treatment of acute attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in patients 12 years of age and older.
Ecallantide is a plasma kallikrein inhibitor. In HAE, excess plasma kallikrein activity leads to overproduction of bradykinin, which causes the episodes of severe swelling characteristic of the disease. By inhibiting plasma kallikrein, ecallantide reduces bradykinin generation and helps control acute HAE attacks.
