DefenCath (Taurolidine and Heparin)
- Medicine Name: DefenCath
- API: Taurolidine and Heparin
- Dosage Form & Strength: Catheter Lock Solution
- Manufactured By: CorMedix Inc
DefenCath is a combination of taurolidine, a thiadiazinane antimicrobial, and heparin, an anti-coagulant, used to reduce the incidence of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) in adults with kidney failure receiving chronic hemodialysis (HD) through a central venous catheter (CVC). This drug is used for use in a limited and specific group of patients.
Recommended Dosage: DefenCath is for instillation into central venous catheters (CVCs) only. It is not intended for systemic administration. Do not use this drug as a catheter lock flush product. Withdraw an ample volume of DefenCath catheter lock solution (CLS) from the vial using a sterile needle and syringe to fill the catheter lumens. Consider a 3mL or 5mL single-dose vial (on behalf of the volume of the catheter lumens) to instill medication into each catheter lumen after each HD session for patients with kidney failure requiring chronic HD. Before initiating the next HD session, DefenCath injection must be aspirated from the catheter and discarded. Each DefenCath single-dose vial is designed for use with a single patient as a single instillation in the central venous catheter (CVC). Discard any unused portion of the medicine remaining in the vial.
- Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) was noted at an incidence rate of 0.3 percent in Trial 1 in patients using heparin, a component of DefenCath injection, as a catheter lock solution (CLS). In case HIT occurs, discontinue treatment and institute suitable supportive measures.
- Drug hypersensitivity reactions were reported at an incidence rate of 0.5 percent in Trial 1 in all those using heparin, a component of the medication DefenCath, as a CLS. If a hypersensitivity reaction occurs, discontinue treatment and institute relevant supportive measures.
- Taurolidine/heparin is not intended for systemic administration. It is intended for use as a CLS in those with kidney failure requiring chronic hemodialysis; therefore, maternal use is not expected to result in fetal exposure to the medicine. Also, breastfeeding is not expected to cause exposure of the infant to the medicine.
