Artesunate for Injection is an antimalarial used for the initial treatment of severe malaria in adult and pediatric patients. Treatment of severe malaria with Artesunate injection should always be followed by a complete treatment course of an appropriate oral antimalarial regimen.
Limitations of Use: This therapeutic drug does not treat the hypnozoite liver stage forms of Plasmodium and will therefore not prevent relapses of malaria because of Plasmodium vivax or Plasmodium ovale. Concomitant treatment with an antimalarial agent such as an 8-aminoquinoline drug is necessary for the treatment of severe malaria because of P. vivax or P. ovale.
Recommended Dosage: The recommended dosage is 2.4 mg/kg administered intravenously at 0, 12, and 24 hours, and thereafter, administered once daily until the patient can tolerate oral antimalarial therapy.
Administer constituted Artesunate intravenously as a slow bolus over 1 to 2 minutes. Do not administer it via continuous intravenous (IV) infusion. Administer this medicinal product with an antimalarial agent that is active against the hypnozoite liver stage forms of Plasmodium, such as an 8-aminoquinoline drug, to those with severe malaria because of P. vivax or P. ovale.
- Artesunate injection may cause hemolysis (the breakdown of red blood cells) after treatment. Monitoring your blood count after treatment is essential to prevent severe complications. Consult your healthcare provider for regular follow-ups to avoid post-treatment hemolysis risks.
- Some individuals may experience hypersensitivity reactions after Artesunate 110 mg Injection. Symptoms may include rash, itching, or swelling. If you notice any allergic reactions, seek medical attention immediately. Always inform your doctor about any known allergies before treatment.
- This medicinal product can cause harm to an unborn baby when administered during pregnancy. Pregnant women should discuss potential risks with their healthcare provider. It is important to use effective contraception during treatment to prevent pregnancy.
- Artesunate for Injection may pass into breast milk, potentially affecting your baby. Consult with your doctor before breastfeeding while receiving treatment to understand any possible risks and the best approach for your health and your baby’s well-being
